Against the infinite scroll

Feeds optimize for time spent. Your reading should optimize for time saved.

The metric is the message

Every feed you use is run by a number, and the number is almost always time spent. Nobody at these companies is evil; they just ship what the metric rewards. The metric rewards one more scroll. So the feed never ends, the videos autoplay, and “you’re all caught up” took a decade to ship and lasted about a quarter.

A tool that profits from your attention cannot also be the steward of it.

Endings are a feature

Paper newspapers had a last page. Albums had a final track. The ending wasn’t a limitation — it was the part that let you feel finished. Software deleted endings because endings are where users leave.

Clove’s deliveries end on purpose. “That’s everything today” is the most-loved message the fox sends, which tells you most of what you need to know about the state of things.

Time saved as the only score

We track one thing: whether the fox’s picks were worth your time, by your own reply. Not opens, not minutes, not streaks. If Clove read 212 posts this week and sent you three great ones, that’s a win — especially if you spent eleven minutes total.

Thanks for reading. The fox thanks you too.
